Recommended Food for Uric Acid Patients

Any food that is rich in vitamin C and has low-purine content is regarded as a food for uric acid patients.

High-purine seafood, processed foods and animal products have been associated to a high uric acid level and also more frequent flares.

In essence, plant-based purines seem not to raise one’s uric acid levels. This article is on a food for uric acid patients and it is important to pay attention to how different foods you eat affect you.

In my last post, I wrote about uric acid foods we should avoid and I gave a simple explanation about gout or uric acid levels. The effects and purposes of foods listed down below are to help manage this disease.

Let’s give a hint on gout and some foods recommended for those individuals suffering from gout.

Gout is a type of arthritis as mentioned in my last post which has to do with inflammation and severe sharp joint pain because of crystalized uric acid deposits. Uric acid can be formed in the body through two mechanisms. They are:

  1. Formed from the body’s own cells
  2. Formed from foods, as a waste product of certain proteins metabolism called nucleo-proteins.

Therefore, food for uric acid patients must the following conditions.

  1. They must facilitate in aiding the elimination of uric. It is noteworthy that alkalizing foods increase uric acid elimination in the urine while acidifying foods do the opposite.
  2. A food for uric acid patients must contain little purine which result in uric acid.

As a matter of fact, it is only vegetables and fruits that meet these conditions. However, grains are good to go for the first condition but not for the second.

This is the reason why above-moderate amounts of grains products are not recommended for people suffering from gout.

Grains have little purine but somewhat acidifying and consuming them often than not makes uric acid elimination from other foods quite difficult.

Therefore, gout sufferers or uric acid patients should avoid consuming to many grains.

List of alkalizing foods

The following foods are recommended for those individuals who are suffering from gout or who have their uric acid levels on the high side.

These foods are good for variety of disorders like diarrhea, uncontrolled diabetes, prolonged fasting or those with kidney failure.

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Pomegranate
  3. Red beet
  4. Lemon
  5. Banana
  6. Potatoes

Tomatoes

Tomatoes

Regardless of the organic acid content such as oxalic acid and malic acid which are responsible for the sour taste, the effect of tomatoes in the blood system is quite alkalizing.

This is because the acids will be transformed to bases in the body and as a result of their alkalizing mineral salts like potassium salts, they are recommended in cases of gout because they aid the elimination of gout-causing uric acid.

Pomegranate

The alkalizing effect of this food is felt in the stomach where it neutralizes excess acid. The effect is the same on the blood which contributes to the acid substance elimination through the urine.

Red Beet

Red beet benefits
RED BEET

This food is particularly rich in mineral salts such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium and this explains their alkalizing effect on the blood.

It is a food for uric acid patients because it is quite beneficial to people with gout and also those whose uric acid levels are on the high side.

Lemon

Benefits of lemon water
Lemon water

The advantage here as a food for uric acid patients is that lemon is a powerful neutralizer of uric acid.

They function in promoting the desolution of urate crystals that are deposited in the tissues and also aids elimination of uric acid through the urine. Other citrus fruits that act same are orange or grapefruits.

Lemon as a fruit is highly recommended for uric acid patients because they combat the metabolic acidiosis resulting from excess acids in the blood.

Banana

Bananas are rich in potassium, a mineral salt that readily forms alkaline salts. Thus, banana prevents excess acidity in the blood and also helps in facilitating the elimination of substances that are acidic through the urine.

Potatoes

This food has antacid effects which are often evidenced in the stomach and also in the blood.

Another food is the chestnut which has abundant mineral salts such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Recommended food for uric acid patients

There are many factors that can contribute to one’s gout risk. However, they (diet) can be modified except age.

The food you eat and some other conditions affecting the kidneys are capable of changing how able your body stands in eliminating uric acid.

Before I put down other foods apart from the alkalizing ones mentioned above, do remember to eat the following moderately.

  • Grains
  • Tofu
  • Eggs
  • Low-fat dairy
  • Vegetables and fruits

Other foods for uric acid patients are:

  1. Celery
  2. Strawberries
  3. Cherries
  4. Vegetables
  5. Apple
  6. Nuts
  7. Fruits
  8. Dairy Products

Celery

Celery has great health benefits
Celery juice

As a food for uric acid patients, it neutralizes excess blood acid while carrying out its diuretic action.

This food helps or facilitates metabolic waste elimination such as uric acid via the urine.

To get more alkalizing effect, it is noteworthy to take the broth from boiling onion and celery. They provide better result because it is a purifying broth.

Strawberries

These fruits are quite diuretic (that means they increase urine volume). They proffer the elimination of uric acid from the blood.

Cherries

They are blood purifiers and quite diuretic which helps in the elimination of uric acid and other certain waste products.

Cherries contain a significant amounts of salicylic acid (a natural precursor of aspirin), that is quite anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory.

One important benefit of this food is that, it helps relieve arthritis produced by gout. Therefore, as a food for uric acid patients, its consumption should be on the increase.

Vegetables

Certain vegetables contain little purine. In essence, they promote the elimination of uric acid produced by other foods.

Apart from celery and tomatoes mentioned above, cauliflower, turnips, green beans and leeks are quite suitable for gout and for those who are at risk for it.

Apple

We included apple as a food for uric acid patients because its treatment promotes the alkalization of the blood and urine which helps in uric acid elimination.

Nuts

Those who suffer from gout are encouraged to partake in nuts consumption because they contain little uric-acid-generating purine. Therefore, they are suitable for gout sufferers.

Fruits

FRUITS AND Vegetables
Fruits and Vegetables

Purine content that generates uric acid in all fruits is somewhat negligible.

They are all diuretic and quite alkalizing in nature which facilitates the elimination of the uric acid from other sources.

Winter cherries, strawberries, lemons, and grapes as mentioned earlier are highly beneficial in cases of high uric acid levels or gout.

Dairy Products

Milk is a food for uric acid patients because milk proteins do not produce uric acid, unlike legumes or meat. Milk and other dairy products facilitate uric acid elimination.

Risk factors of Gout

There are several risk factors which can be controlled while others can’t be controlled, such as genetics and age. Some of the risk factors are:

  1. Diet (A diet high in purine, fruit sugar and alcohol). They increase one’s risk of gout
  2. Medical conditions such as hypertension, kidney disease
  3. Obesity
  4. Sex
  5. Age
