Abstaining from foods that make allergies worse can improve any kind of food allergy. This is because some foods can cause allergic reactions. Before listing the foods that make allergies worse, I’d like us to know more about allergies, causes and foods as a cause of allergy.
What is allergy?
An allergy can be seen as the body’s means of rejecting chemical substance called allergen or antigen. The next thing we ought to know is what may be the cause and by what means.
Previously, I mentioned about chemical substances which could be rejected by the body or simply put antigen. It could be through inhalation, injection or ingestion with food but this post is limited to only the foods that make allergies worse.
Causes of allergies
The chemical substance which could have been ingested with food, introduced into the body or inhaled can cause an allergic reaction.
Foods as a cause of allergy
The foods that are discussed here below frequently cause allergic reactions or even make it worse. Consuming these foods also promote allergic reactions to other substances or food. For example, in sensitive individuals, milk may precipitate an allergic reaction to other substances or foods and even trigger other forms of allergic reactions.

Manifestations of Allergy
Before we talk about the list of foods that make allergies worse, we have to know something about allergy manifestation. In essence, symptoms of allergies or allergic reactions frequently appear on the skin, the digestive system and the respiratory system. There are many cases of the following ailments which are seen as allergic reactions. They are;

Shellfish is the first on the list of foods that make allergies worse because of its frequent cause of allergies. In some cases shellfish allergy is as a result of the protein they contain. On the other hand, it could be due to the parasitic anisakis larvae they hold.
The intoxication or infection they cause is quite a different process than the allergic reactions they cause. In cases of allergies, consumption of shellfish should be discontinued because it is evident they are one of the foods that make allergies worse.
Milk
Among the types of milk we consume, cow’s milk is the most frequent causes of allergy especially in adolescents and infants. Nevertheless, it may not or may coincide with lactose intolerance.
As one of the foods that make allergies worse, milk allergy is produced by the milk protein injection and is frequently manifested in urtcaria, eczema, atopic dermatitis, flatulence, diarrhea (digestive symptoms), and asthma (respiratory symptoms.
It adult, allergy to milk is capable of causing migraine. Some of the instances of cow’s milk allergy may contribute to allergic reactions to other substances or foods.
Fish
In children, allergy to fish tends to manifest as atopic eczema or even asthma and in adults it tends to cause asthma, urticaria and other forms of allergic reactions. Studies find that there are several species of fish that cause allergy.
For example, one would get allergic by consuming anisakis-infested fish because this type is one of the frequent causes of fish allergy. In essence, anisakis-infested fish is one of the foods that make allergies worse and its consumption should be avoided.
Meat
A study conducted at John Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA) proved that many children who seem or are allergic to cow’s milk are also allergic to meat (beef).
This could be as a result of both foods having the same type of protein. Therefore, regular meat consumption is capable of presenting meat as one of the frequent causes of allergies or one of the foods that make allergies worse especially if it is not well cooked.
Egg
Egg white contains protein called ovomucoid which causes allergic reactions in children and even in adults. Common manifestations of allergic reactions to egg are asthma and atopic dermatitis.
Additives
Some of the most allergic-producing foods additives are benzoic acid, coloring and sulfites. Some of their manifestations are urticaria, eczema, asthma and rhinitis. In cases of allergies, utilizing these additives should be discontinued.
Cured Cheeses
It is noteworthy that milk proteins found in cheese are capable of causing allergies. Lysozyme which is a protein found in egg is used in cheeses and it also provokes allergic reactions even to other substances or foods. Other causes of allergies in cheeses are vasocontrictive amines (histamine and tiramine).
Alcoholic Beverages
Beer and wine are capable of causing allergies due to their additive and chemical contents. Substances like tiramine which is contained in wine facilitates allergic reactions while beer also contributes to allergies due to the presence of its yeast residue. In essence, wine and beer are also listed among the foods that make allergies worse.

Chocolate
The presence of phenylethylamine a stimulant contained in chocolate is capable of causing allergy or making allergies worse.
Honey
Experiments conducted at the University of Vienna in Austria found that allergies due to honey consumption are as a result of the components of honey. These components are proteins in small amounts which come from bees’ pharyngeal glands and the pollen residue.
Spices
Through skin contact, allergies or allergic reactions tends to manifest. Another thing could be by inhalation of their dust or through ingestion. Manifestations are eczema, urticaria, rhinitis, asthma, flatulence and diarrhea.
Vegetables
Celery and carrots are the vegetables that seem quite allergic. In cases of allergic reactions, they should be avoided until it is proven that the causes of allergic reactions are no longer linked to them.
Remember that celery is a blood cleanser and carrot can be combined with asparagus to produce asparagus juice which is quite good for the kidney. In essence, celery and carrot should not be listed as bad foods. However, when it comes to allergies, they are listed as foods that make allergies worse.
Gluten
This type of protein is mainly found in barley, wheat and rye. This causes celiac disease especially in sensitive individuals. It also contributes to eczema and atopic dermatitis.
Nuts
Nuts are capable of causing allergies especially in children. Usual manifestation can be eczema. Peanuts and peanut butter cause allergic reactions.
Fruits
Avocado, strawberries, kiwi, papaya, raspberries, banana and currants are some of the fruits that frequently cause allergies.
Being allergic to a type of food is only pronounced in sensitive individuals. However, it is noteworthy that no products or foods cause allergy in everybody. Nevertheless, any product or food, even other substances are capable of causing allergic reactions in individuals are highly sensitive.
Also remember there are other adverse food reactions which may be due to intoxication or intolerance caused by certain foods. Their mechanisms are quite different and should be differentiated.
In cases of allergies and the causes are not likely clear, it is recommended to consider antiallergic diet in order to do away with food that make allergies worse. When allergies are managed, these foods listed may be added back or be considered for consumption. This should be done slowly and in a controlled manner.
However, when the symptoms reappear, then the foods that make allergies worse should be discontinued. To overcome food allergies, abstinence is key and another means is to take five tangerines or oranges every day.
